Unit III Vocabulary test will be administered on Monday; the Unit 1-III vocabulary exercises will be assigned and due on Monday, October 19 for a cumulative exam to be scheduled. Books are due in class on Thursday for this cumulative review assignment.
Bedford Reader is required for classes on Monday-Tuesday; Period Three will take the literary terms test on Tuesday that was scheduled for last Friday. The outline for Part III of Bedford Reader will be due on Tuesday, October 20. An initial nonfiction selection from either Bedford Reader or Language of Composition will be covered in class early in the week.
Talking points for Chapters Eleven-Fifteen of Their Eyes Were Watching God are due on Friday for our usual class discussion; those students who did not earn discussion points last week will be given an opportunity on Monday as we finish up Chapters Six-Ten.
Writer's Choice textbooks are due in class on Wednesday for grammar review.
The next AP Essay, featuring prompt and passage from writer James Baldwin, will be scheduled this week. Prewriting will be assigned and then collected; students will compose the essay on a date to be announced and use the prewriting that was completed for their analysis essay.
Cornell Notes recorded during the first week of school will be reviewed and a Cornell Notes Quiz will be scheduled in class.

Work was begun on a tone assignment in class and will continue this week with the "apply" section of the activity. Bedford Reader terms 21-30 will be reviewed in class Monday and Tuesday, when the textbook is due in class, and a quiz date will be set. Bedford Reader outlining for Chapter Two is due today, Monday and Chapter Three outlining due date will be set. The Virginia Woolf essay will be written in class on Wednesday and prewriting will be returned to students. Writer's Choice text and grammar assignment will be rescheduled this week to Thursday when that textbook and Unit III of Vocabulary Workshop will be due. Five talking points per chapter are due Friday for Their Eyes Were Watching God Chapters 6-10; a class discussion is scheduled for Friday. Work on prose passages #2 and #3 continues all week. When time permits, Cornell Notes will be finished and a quiz scheduled. The Los Angeles Times assignments will begin after paper deliveries begin; they were scheduled two weeks ago but have not arrived on a weekly basis yet. This week's blog debuts the weekly schedule in narrative form rather than in a day-by-day format.
Monday is an unassigned day and this class resumes on Tuesday with a literary terms test on words 11-20 in Bedford Reader. Students will be provided brief study time in class before this quiz. The Richard Rodriguez essay rewrites are due today; students should staple the new draft on top of the first draft. Their Eyes Were Watching God has been issued to students and they will write twenty-five talking points for each chapter for Friday's class discussion--the chapters due will be announced in class. Bedford Reader's second chapter will be assigned for outlining and a due date set. The Virginia Woolf prompt will be assigned this week for prewriting and the essay will be completed in class with a date to be scheduled. Students are asked to think about the fifteen-page research paper due in the spring and will choose a specific area of focus on the topic of a natural disaster tied to water conservation. Prose passages #2 and #3 will be completed in class with discussions on how to best answer multiple choice questions accurately and with precision. Cornell Notes that have not been completed yet will be finished by week's end. Vocabulary Workshop Unit II answers are due in class on Thursday as is the book. Writers Choice textbook has been assigned and will be due in class on Wednesday for a grammar lesson. Bedford Reader is due now on Mondays and Tuesdays, and the assigned novel is due on successive Fridays. Los Angeles Times newspapers will be distributed on Friday and a letter to the editor assigned with due date to be announced. "Summer assignments that are not submitted by due date will be scored as “0,” which may negatively affect a student’s overall course score and earned class grade point average. Assignments that are completed and submitted late will receive only a “credit,” and not earn a letter grade; in this case a student must complete the work to avoid receiving a “0” but will still earn no letter grade for work that was completed. It is in the student’s best interest to meet deadlines and submit work of the highest quality by due dates."
Procedure:
Access collegeboard.com, click students, click AP, click courses/exams, and download the course description for AP English Language.
Take the multiple choice test recording handwritten answers on lined paper or typed responses on copy paper. Check your answers with the key at the end of the sample multiple choice exam. For each question, record a detailed answer of at least a sentence or two about why the answer is correct.
Answer three of the seven free-response questions in essay form. Of the three choices, a synthesis question must be included.
Questions can be addressed by e-mailing me at jcarmicl@lausd.net or by using the school's website link for teacher communication.
