Students will travel on Wednesday, June 9 to Metropolitan Water District of Southern California for the Junior Defense of Thesis. Students meet in the cafeteria from 7:45-8:20 A.M. before boarding the train at Hollywood and Highland to Union Station. Eight students have been chosen to present their defenses and then the classes will engage in discourse representing their respective member cities' water conservation strategies to meet the state mandate of saving 20% by 2020.

Water Case Nine will be debated in class Tuesday, June 1, a shortened day. Students chosen to present at Metropolitan Water District of Southern California June 9 field trip will re-present their Defense of Thesis to students either this week or next. Field trip forms are required and if students do not submit them by Thursday they will not attend the trip. Appropriate attire is required; students should dress as if they are interviewing for a job.

Unit Twelve Vocabulary Workshop is due on Tuesday, June 1; test will be scheduled later in the week.

AP Exam Preparation Week Two

Essay two (Question 2) is a timed, in-class writing assignment scheduled for Monday.

Essay three (Question 3) is a timed, in-class writing assignment scheduled for Wednesday.

A full practice multiple choice test is administered in class on Tuesday and Thursday under timed conditions.

Since most AP English Language students will be writing the AP US History test on Friday, those students who are not taking that exam will complete additional practice for the May 12 AP English Language exam in class.

The research paper due date is May 17; no late papers will be accepted. Students will complete a precis in class; outline and works cited pages are required before the final paper submission.

Students are encouraged to access research source list on teacher pages to begin research paper draft. The agenda bin for this week includes a working outline, recast thesis statement and Writer's Choice assignments due Monday, April 12; specifics follow.

A preliminary working outline of the research paper is due today. Use your Writer's Choice textbook to examine a sample outline, particularly noting outline format rules. Do NOT mix phrases and sentences; outlines are either all phrases or all sentences. The abstract and your own research of the Bay-Delta and the assigned city should provide enough information for this assignment.

Writer's Choice is due in class Tuesday and Wednesday for additional assignments related to your research, including the recast of your thesis statement, which is also due as a separate assignment on Monday. Do not include the thesis statement with the outline since they must be two separate documents.

Literary terms from Bedford Reader and Language of Composition will be reviewed in class in preparation for the upcoming AP exam. Bring all copies of completed literary terms tests beginning Thursday for review.

Students will write a reflection of AP Examination Preparation-Week One on Monday. This reflection will be used to determine the effectiveness of essay snd multiple choice skills. The detailed answer key for the multiple choice from last week will be provided to students so they may determine scores and justifications for correct answers.

Assigned reading from Bedford Reader and Language of Composition will be assigned during the week.

Abstract:

The Sacramento-San Joaquin Bay Delta (Bay-Delta), because of a number of factors, faces current conditions that have severely restricted water supplies to farms, businesses and millions of residents in Central and Southern California, a prime concern for a host of stakeholders, including water districts statewide. Facing legal and environmental restrictions, climate change impacts, drought, and continued population growth, the Bay-Delta and stakeholders throughout California are being challenged to meet a new, legislative mandate to lower per capita water use through local conservation measures that will help achieve a 20% statewide reduction in water use by 2020. In order to meet this mandate, member agencies of the Metropolitan Water District’s Southern California service area will play an important role in developing goals and objectives of their own if they are able to enact and sustain a mosaic of water conservation solutions. The innovative ideas and consumer incentives of these communities will provide “local solutions for statewide benefits” since strategies that are developed and implemented by each will result in conservation measures that can benefit all.

The 2007 College Board synthesis essay on advertising is due Tuesday. Students spent time annotating the sources in class last week; the prompt and the sources are online at collegeboard.com if additional information is needed to prepare the essay. No late exceptions are permitted since this essay was assigned a week ago.

Tuesday's agenda includes the wrap-up discussion of the prologue and Chapters One-Five of Ellison's Invisible Man. Dialectical journal entries for Chapters Six-Ten (two entries per chapter) are due on Friday for the next class discussion. The "Politics and the English Language" by George Orwell selection from Language of Composition responses are due today; no late exceptions since this assignment could have been e-mailed to meet the deadline. Bedford Readers are due in class today for the last five literary terms and the next assigned reading selection.

The multiple choice test for Orwell's "Shooting an Elephant" is due Wednesday; this assignment will be scored and a grade entered for each student. Language of Composition books are due in class today for the next assigned reading selection.

Period Two's letter to the editor for the Los Angeles Times editorial response is due Thursday. Period Three will receive a similar assignment on Thursday. The test for Vocabulary Workshop Units One-Six is scheduled in class today.

Final exams are scheduled and included on the school master calendar; AP English Language students will write one essay and complete a sixty-minute multiple choice examination during the two-hour final.

Be certain to notate quotes and textual evidence for the upcoming Invisible Man essay; two complete typed copies will be required from each student.

Welcome back to AP English Language and Composition after a holiday break. Here is the schedule for this week:

The Great Gatsby essay is due January 11 and must have been submitted on gomyaccess.com as a scored essay. Essay scores are approximate and the final essay scores will be graded up or down depending on thesis, textual evidence cited, structure, and audience. There are no exceptions for late work since this essay was assigned during the last week of instruction before the holiday break.

Invisible Man discussion will begin this week as students submit by January 11 the dialectical journal entries for the prologue and Chapters One-Five. The Booker T. Washington "Atlanta Exposition Address" responses have been scored and will be returned to students. This piece is related to Ellison's novel and discussions of Washington and others will be drawn from the material throughout the book. Students can expect to journal additional chapters of this important novel as class discussions proceed this semester. There are no exceptions for late work. Students who anticipate being absent must e-mail the entries as an attachment by today's deadline.

Pages 72-83 of Vocabulary Workshop review for Units One-Six answers will be provided in class; the Unit One-Six Cumulative Test is scheduled for later this week or the beginning of next week.

Language of Composition textbooks and Bedford Reader textbooks are due in class Monday and Tuesday for in-class and homework assignments.

Pages 72-83 of Vocabulary Workshop review for Units One-Six is due Monday; the Unit One-Six Cumulative Test will be scheduled later this week or after the holiday break.

Great Gatsby DCQ is due on Tuesday.

Sign-in codes and user names will be issued this week for gomyaccess.com, which students will use to compose and submit the final essay on Great Gatsby due January 11, 2010. Textual evidence and proper citations will be required.

Talking points for Great Gatsby Chapters Seven-Nine are scheduled for Monday. The film will be screened on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.

The Booker T. Washington piece rhetoric question responses from Language of Composition are due Wednesday.

Water Politics Case Three unit test and class activity has been postponed until after the holiday break.

The global warming synthesis essay is due today, Monday.

Students will complete reading and dialectical journal entries for Invisible Man. Specific information will be assigned by week's end.

Students will complete all Vocabulary Workshop pages between the end of Unit Six and the beginning of Unit Seven in preparation for the Unit One-Six Cumulative Test, scheduled for next week in class.

Letter to the Editor response is due from Period Three on Tuesday. Period Two will write a Letter to the Editor response on Thursday and submit it the following Tuesday.

The Great Gatsby Chapters Seven-Nine talking points are due Friday for the usual class discussion. Screening of the film will be scheduled for next week. The essay for the novel will be completed online in the Vantage Writing Lab with a date yet to be set. The Gatsby DCQ activity will be assigned as homework with a due date to be announced. The Gatsby compare-contrast essay is due today.

The Bedford Reader literary terms will be reviewed in class on Monday and the test is scheduled for the next day. Language of Composition books should be brought on Tuesday for the Booker T. Washington selection review and rhetoric questions to be assigned.

Water Politics Case Two activity continues on Wednesday with Case Three to be assigned. A Writer's Choice grammar assignment is also scheduled for today so books should be brought to class.

The environmental synthesis essay will be written in class on Thursday; reading selections A-F will be provided for students before the essay.

Vocabulary Workshop Unit Five test is scheduled for Tuesday in class. Unit Six answers are due on Thursday and the next unit test will be scheduled.

An on-demand writing assignment is scheduled for Thursday. The prompt will be distributed the day before so students may read the prompt and the passages ahead of the in-class essay due at the end of the period Thursday.

Both AP classes are scheduled to complete either diction or detail assignments, which will be due at the end of the week.

A reading and writing assignment from Language of Composition has been made and is due on Tuesday. The selection is "A Modest Proposal," an essay by Jonathan Swift.

The third period AP class has a letter to the editor also due on Tuesday as students respond to a Los Angeles Times editorial.

A grammar assignment is scheduled for Wednesday when textbooks are due in class.

Bring Bedford Reader to class on Monday and Tuesday when the next reading selections will be assigned. Literary terms from this textbook will also be reviewed and the next test scheduled.

The first synthesis essay is due on Monday. Students used sources A-H to compose a well-written, tightly-constructed composition at home.

Both AP classes were scheduled with either detail or diction prompt homework assignments, which had different due dates.

There is no school on Wednesday, Veterans Day.

Grammar assignment for this week is postponed because of the holiday; however the Unit Five Vocabulary Workshop answers are due Thursday.

Bring Bedford Reader to class on Monday and Tuesday when the next reading selection will be assigned. Literary terms from this textbook will also be reviewed and the next test scheduled.

Vocabulary Workshop Unit IV is due on Thursday in class when textbooks should be presented. Test for this unit is scheduled for Friday.

Grammar from Writer's Choice text (perfect tenses page 585) is due on Wednesday; in lieu of a grammar lesson, students will compose in class their first synthesis essay in preparation for the upcoming Advanced Placement English Language and Composition exam scheduled in May 2010. Sources A-H will be sent home with students early in the week so they may be read for prewriting before the prompt is presented in class on Wednesday.

Part II of Their Eyes Were Watching God film screening is scheduled for Monday in class. Students will complete a multiple choice exam for the book during the week; The Great Gatsby will be assigned either late this week or early next week.

The Bedford Reader text is required in class Tuesday for Judith Ortiz Cofer's "Silent Dancing" nonfiction selection. Students were assigned six questions from the Reader to be completed in advance of the class. Literary terms will also be covered and a test scheduled for the next ten terms.

Work on the research paper begins with topic, thesis statement and five guiding questions on water conservation and natural disaster Junior Defense of Thesis presentations.

Vocabulary Workshop I-III Cumulative test is scheduled for today, Monday. Students must attach work to test. Unit IV will be scheduled in class.

Bedford Reader must be brought to class on Mondays and Tuesday. Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery" will be discussed and analyzed both days to further understanding of the narrative mode of writing. Bedford Reader literary terms (next set of ten) will be assigned and a test scheduled.

Writer's Choice textbooks are due on Wednesday for verb lesson that was begun last week. Additionally, the research paper section will be discussed as students ready their topics for the spring research paper.

The next in-class writing assignment, students' first synthesis essay, will be scheduled this week and Sources A-H assigned for reading prior to the essay.

Their Eyes Were Watching God multiple choice exam will be scheduled and the film screening date set; letters must be signed and returned before previewing the film.

In-class multiple-choice practice continues all week.

Bedford Reader is required for classes on Monday-Tuesday; the outline for Part III of Bedford Reader will be due on Tuesday, October 20. An initial nonfiction selection from either Bedford Reader or Language of Composition will be covered in class early in the week and an assignment made. Additional literary terms will be covered in class and a quiz scheduled.

Talking points for Chapters Sixteen-Twenty of Their Eyes Were Watching God are due on Friday for our usual class discussion; those students who did not earn discussion points last week will be given an opportunity on Monday as we finish up Chapters Eleven-Fifteen.

Writer's Choice textbooks are due in class on Wednesday for grammar review; the sentence diagramming assignment will be retaught since many students were on field trips or taking the PSAT exam last week.

The next AP Essay, featuring prompt and passage from writer James Baldwin, will be scheduled for Thursday as an in-class timed writing assignment. Prewriting will collected on Monday and students will not see the prompt again until the in-class timed essay.

Work was begun on a tone assignment in class and will continue this week with the "apply" section of the activity. Bedford Reader terms 21-30 will be reviewed in class Monday and Tuesday, when the textbook is due in class, and a quiz date will be set. Bedford Reader outlining for Chapter Two is due today, Monday and Chapter Three outlining due date will be set. The Virginia Woolf essay will be written in class on Wednesday and prewriting will be returned to students. Writer's Choice text and grammar assignment will be rescheduled this week to Thursday when that textbook and Unit III of Vocabulary Workshop will be due. Five talking points per chapter are due Friday for Their Eyes Were Watching God Chapters 6-10; a class discussion is scheduled for Friday. Work on prose passages #2 and #3 continues all week. When time permits, Cornell Notes will be finished and a quiz scheduled. The Los Angeles Times assignments will begin after paper deliveries begin; they were scheduled two weeks ago but have not arrived on a weekly basis yet. Other work will be scheduled and announced during the week in class.

This week's blog debuts the weekly schedule in narrative form rather than in a day-by-day format.

Monday is an unassigned day and this class resumes on Tuesday with a literary terms test on words 11-20 in Bedford Reader. Students will be provided brief study time in class before this quiz. The Richard Rodriguez essay rewrites are due today; students should staple the new draft on top of the first draft. Their Eyes Were Watching God has been issued to students and they will write twenty-five talking points for each chapter for Friday's class discussion--the chapters due will be announced in class. Bedford Reader's second chapter will be assigned for outlining and a due date set. The Virginia Woolf prompt will be assigned this week for prewriting and the essay will be completed in class with a date to be scheduled. Students are asked to think about the fifteen-page research paper due in the spring and will choose a specific area of focus on the topic of a natural disaster tied to water conservation. Prose passages #2 and #3 will be completed in class with discussions on how to best answer multiple choice questions accurately and with precision. Cornell Notes that have not been completed yet will be finished by week's end. Vocabulary Workshop Unit II answers are due in class on Thursday as is the book. Writers Choice textbook has been assigned and will be due in class on Wednesday for a grammar lesson. Bedford Reader is due now on Mondays and Tuesdays, and the assigned novel is due on successive Fridays. Los Angeles Times newspapers will be distributed on Friday and a letter to the editor assigned with due date to be announced. Check teacher pages frequently for specific homework assignments and due dates to be updated during this week.
